 Kailash Joshi Dr. Kailash Joshi - Former IBM General Manager, President Foundation For Excellence 
(Silicon Valley)

Kailash Joshi, a retired IBM executive, is known for his humanitarian contributions and mentoring of entrepreneurs, companies and non-profit organizations. He co-founded TiE (www.tie.org) in 1992. In 2001, he led the major fund drive for Gujarat earthquake victims that became AIF (www.aif.org). Again in 2004 he was instrumental in raising substantial funds for the Tsunami victims.

Kailash currently serves as President of Foundation For Excellence (www.ffe.org) and as Chairman of Global Institute of Intellectual Property www.giipinfo.org). 

Kailash started his career on the Cornell University research faculty and had an accomplished career at IBM Corporation. He was the General Manager of IBM Lexington, KY (now Lexmark, NYSE: LXK). He was also responsible for IBM’s reentry in to India in 1991. After taking early retirement from IBM, Kailash moved to Silicon Valley in 1992, where he has been engaged with small technology companies in different capacities and has been part of some successful mergers.

During 2006-2008 he helped introduce a 911-like emergency system for his native state of Uttarakhand (uses 108 dialing), and some other Indian states.  In 1987, Kailash also co-founded Bluegrass Indo-American Civic Society in Lexington, KY in 1987 (biacs.org). He served India Community Center (indiacc.org) as a Co-President and Director in the starting years.

Kailash holds a B.E. degree with distinction in Metallurgy from Indian institute of Science, Bangalore, a M.S. degree from Washington State University, and a Ph.D. degree from Cornell University. In October, 2005 Kailash was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Science degree of HNB Garhwal University at a special convocation presided by President of India, Hon. Abdul Kalam, for his contributions to entrepreneurship and Information Technology.

He lives in Palo Alto, California. His hobbies include golf, bridge, hiking and gardening. His son, Himanshu “Monty” also lives in Palo Alto with his wife Sonia and three young daughters, Miya, Laila and Nissa.

Renu Bhatt - President UMA (Silicon Valley)
Born and brought up in India, Renu moved to USA in 1999. She is an IT professional with focus on Training and Project Management. Renu is an ardent nature lover who loves to sing, travel, go on long drives and pull pranks on people. She is an old-timer with UMA and has worked with the organization in different roles. She lives in Bay Area with her husband Sandeep Thapliyal and two girls Nishi and Aashi.





 


Anoop Nautiyal
 - Former CEO Uttarakhand 108 Emergency Services (India)

Anoop Nautiyal is a Dehradun, Uttarakhand based social and corporate leader with over two decades of global and national leadership experience in the social, for-profit and Government sectors. He is well known for his participative and integrity driven leadership style with a high degree of passion for improving lives and giving back to society. 

Anoop has a strong social orientation and successfully established and led the free 108 emergency services in the Public Private Partnership (PPP) mode for the Government of Uttarakhand. The 108 services have been widely acknowledged as the single biggest Government success story in the history of Uttarakhand since its inception as a state in the year 2000. Anoop also served as the Health Advisor to the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand. He earlier held the position of Country Manager for the iconic, USD 18 Billion Swedish global clothing giant H&M Hennes & Mauritz in India for five years before stepping into the not for profit sector. He has lived and worked abroad for many years in Hong Kong, Bangladesh, Indonesia and Mauritius and was involved with global supply chain management and international sourcing roles.  

Anoop is an alumnus of the Shri Ram College of Commerce, Delhi University and National Institute of Fashion Technology, New Delhi. Anoop is actively engaged with leadership and social issues with particular focus on Uttarakhand and appears and writes regularly for national and local media. He is the Chairman for India Media Centre (IMC), a think tank of media professionals, intellectuals and socially active individuals, for the Uttarakhand chapter. 

Anoop is also collaborating with various other institutions and networks that are focused on providing long term rehabilitation and relief to the victims of the June 2013 Uttarakhand disaster.


 Major General Sheru Thapliyal Major General Sheru Thapliyal - Retired Indian Army (India)

Major General Sheru Thapliyal was born in Dehradun and had his early schooling in St Mary’s School in Meerut.  After completing his Senior Cambridge in 1962, he joined the Nation Defence Academy in Jan 1963.  He was commissioned into the Artillery on 25th December 1966.  The General Officer is a graduate of Long Gunnery Staff Course, Defence Services Staff College Course, Higher Command Course and National Defence College Course.  His academic qualifications include MSc and M Phil in Defence Studies, Post Graduate Diploma in Business Management and a PhD in Sino-Indian Relations. He is a Fellow of Pune University in Weapons Technology and a member of All India Management Association.  

The General Officer has been an instructor at the School of Artillery Deolali and has commanded a field regiment in J&K, a mountain brigade in Sikkim and a division in Ladakh.  He has served in Military Operations Directorate, Perspective Planning Directorate and Operations Logistics Directorate in Army HQ and has been Military Advisor to then Army Chief in 1997-98.

After his premature retirement from the Army in 2004, the General officer is working for a multinational business house where he is a Vice President Business Development of one company and Director of another company.  He is presently based in Delhi.

The General officer is married with three children.  His two daughters are married and settled in USA.  His son did his engineering in Electronics from Wichita University in US and is now working for a multinational company in New York.  The General officer’s wife Mrs. Rekha Thapliyal, who has taught in prestigious schools like Wilham Girls School Dehradun and St Columba’s Delhi now works for a few NGOs in Delhi.

The General Officer contributes regularly to magazines, periodicals and newspapers and appears on TV channels in debates and Seminars on national security issues and delivers lectures on these issues in various institutes.  He is an elected member of the governing council of United Services Institute and a member of Institute of Defence Studies and Analysis, Institute of Peace and Conflict Studies, Institute of Chinese Studies, Observer Research Foundation and Delhi Policy Groups – all leading think tanks in the capital.

Jhoomar Nimkar - Secretary - Silicon Valley

Jhoomar Nimkar holds a Masters degree in Pharmaceutical Science from India and a Graduate Diploma in Systems Analysis from National University of Singapore. She worked with the Ministry of Health in Singapore and was a also a Senior consultant at National Computer Systems, Singapore. After relocating to The U.S in 2001, she obtained a Graduate Certificate in Biomedical Informatics from Oregon Health and Science University and has continued to work in the healthcare Information Technology arena. She is currently a Project Manager with San Mateo County Health System.








Dr. Rajive Joshi - Treasurer - Silicon Valley
Rajive grew up in Dehradun, India and has been connected with the local Silicon Valley Uttarakhandi community since 1998. He has been an active core volunteer since UMA's inception, helping out with various local Silicon Valley UMA events including annual functions, picnics, hikes, and special occasions. He has also been involved in supporting various charitable causes and fundraising, including the scholarship program and partner organizations. He initiated the move to a new IT platform to bring more operational efficiency. In addition to managing the finances, he is also responsible for the IT infrastructure.
